Sequence order: which run beats which
Sequences compare by their top card. The order runs A-K-Q (highest) down through K-Q-J, Q-J-10 … to 4-3-2 — with A-2-3 ranking as the lowest sequence (the ace wraps low). So Q-K-A beats J-Q-K, and any 4-3-2 beats A-2-3. The same top-card logic applies to pure sequences. Groups occasionally house-rule the ace differently — confirm before playing for anything that matters.
Ties, pairs and kickers
- Same category: compare the highest card, then the second, then the third. K♦ 9♦ 4♦ beats K♣ 8♣ 5♣ on the second card.
- Pairs: higher pair wins first (K-K-x beats Q-Q-x); if pairs match, the kicker (third card) decides.
- Identical hands: split-pot or house rule — in two-player shows, some groups award the pot to the player who did not request the show. Agree upfront.

Hands beginners mix up
- Colour vs sequence: K♦ 9♦ 4♦ (colour) loses to any run like 7♥ 6♦ 5♣. Suit alone never beats a run.
- Pair vs high card with an ace: the smallest pair (2-2-x) beats even ace-high. Any pair > no pair, always.
- Two sequences, one suited: the pure (suited) run wins regardless of ranks — 4♠ 3♠ 2♠ beats A♥ K♦ Q♣.
